Teaching Philosophy
The reason I teach is to share the musical knowledge and passion I’ve acquired over the years with students eager to learn. I reference methods and techniques I've learned from my own teachers, while also incorporating my personal experience as a musician.
As for any student trying to improve on any instrument, the overall goal is to be able to create music that both the student and a listener will enjoy. That is the reason why we call ourselves musicians: to entertain, to enjoy, and to have fun. As musicians, the reason we should spend time learning and practicing is to be able to develop the skills necessary on our instrument in order to produce the best music possible, in the most efficient way possible.

Trumpet Lessons

Lesson with Allan Dean in 2016
My personal approach to teaching private trumpet lessons focuses on giving students all of the materials needed to be able to succeed on their own. I am there to motivate, guide, and provide students with the tools necessary for improvement. The most important foundation for trumpet players is the incorporation of fundamentals in individual practice. Some of the basic trumpet fundamentals include the idea of producing a full resonant sound, incorporating relaxed breathing, and using focused airflow. Other fundamentals include ear training, tonguing, lip slurs, finger dexterity, range, etc. We will take these fundamentals and learn to successfully employ them in the modern trumpet repertoire. To go about this, I provide students with helpful ways and specific exercises to successfully practice fundamentals. We then connect what we have learned in our fundamentals to make music preparation more efficient.
The process to go about improvement in lessons will vary depending on the student. What might work for one student might not be as effective for another student of the same level. Together we will create a system of practice that will be tailored to the individual student. Again, the objective is not only to help students reinforce correct practice and performance methods, but also to help guide them on a path that they can eventually take on their own.
